A patent-pending design uses the cool air drawn from the earth to naturally cool and moderate the greenhouse temperature. This can significantly reduce energy consumption and bills by up to 80 percent. For new greenhouse constructions, this means a vastly reduced carbon footprint for cities.

In offshore rigs, the lighting is also subject to shock and vibration. McGeoch produces the Endurance luminaire (Fig. 1), which is designed as a direct replacement for existing conventional or fluorescent fittings. It is engineered for hazardous areas and particularly for where flammable gases may be present, with ingress protection to IP68 (for indefinite immersion in water) and to IP66 when fitted with a breather drain (for protection against powerful water jets). The sealed luminaire has a constant-current 700-mA driver circuit for use on mains supplies worldwide and an additional, low-level emergency supply. It is maintenance-free, says the company, and is ATEX approved Zone 1 and 21 (directives published by the European Union) for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

A number of utilities are recognising the potential of this market and have deployed innovative commercial projects. For example, Dutch utility Alliander partnered with Signify and Cisco on an innovative smart street lighting project in Amsterdam. Adaptive lighting, security cameras, and a public wi-fi network are some of the applications being tested. Enel X also offers European cities advanced smart lighting solutions – the utility has installed more than 1.8 million LED lamps in Italy. In the UK, SSE Enterprise Contracting maintains more than one million street lights and helps local authorities utilise smart LED technology for street light dimming, fault reporting and energy savings. The company also helps cities integrate smart city applications such as air quality reporting and traffic management with its lighting solution.

2. EV charging infrastructure EV charging is one of the most important smart city business opportunities for utilities. By 2020, Navigant Research estimates that more than 4,000GWh of electricity will be consumed by plug-in EVs annually in the US alone. If utilities do not become the primary provider of EV supply equipment and services, they will be shut out of the most significant load growth factor within the next 10-20 years.

As regards wind energy, the latest auction being conducted by SECI stipulates the minimum and maximum size a developer can bid for as 50MW and 300MW, respectively. Certain states also have stipulated the minimum size a developer can bid for in the auctions being conducted by their state nodal agencies. For example, for tenders conducted in 2018, Gujarat stipulated the minimum size of the project to be 25MW, and Maharashtra stipulated the minimum size of the bid to be 25MW for intra-state projects and 50MW for inter-state projects.
