So, why haven’t Cree’s LED lights become the industry standard? The first reason is that LED bulbs cost substantially more than HPS bulbs upfront, although the long-term costs would seem to favor LEDs due to their lower operating cost and longer life expectancy. And second, yields from LED lights aren’t as well known within the industry, so it’s tough to get growers to shift from what they’re comfortable with.
As the company’s website explains it, the technology uses a special “spectral filter” film that allows around 70 per cent of natural light to pass through the window.
I applaud this, but always hesitate with an expectation it will be implemented. Technology in research, all be it close, there are always hurdles and can fall down. Smart move joining up in Israel as a partner, they would have huge motivation to do this, imagine the benefits for them to make it work.

The Hadrian X construction robot is a fully automated 3D robotic bricklaying system capable of building a house in two days. Hadrian X uses FBR’s Dynamic Stabilisation Technology, which corrects for environmental factors in real time enabling precision robotics in large scale outdoor applications.
Think, for example, to the fast food industry, which itself is facing automation. Uber, for its part, appears to be heading in the same direction—it is spending heavily on a future where self-driving vehicles may be the norm, and drivers are obsolete. The firm spent over $457 million in 2018 to research and develop a unit focused on futuristic projects including autonomous vehicles and flying cars.

Of course, LEO operators could scale-up peak service capacity by launching ever bigger constellations or deploying bigger satellites with wider payloads. Or they might evolve increasingly intelligent ways to dynamically focus transponder bandwidth into a highly concentrated service region during a fly-by. That capability could be delivered incrementally as operators replenish a fleet or in-situ, by leveraging new software-defined space platforms such as the recently announced SmartSat from Lockheed Martin. At any rate, the most effective satellite IoT systems will be dimensioned to serve cost-effective “hot-spots” around major population hubs. Note that Geostationary Orbit (GEO) holds some clear advantages in this regard and this could hold some significance in certain network deployments.
Miriam shared details about the benefits of these smart off-grid solutions, why these new technologies work so well, and she shared some case studies of current installations across the globe.
Anticipating this fiercely competitive environment, how might LEO operators attempt to differentiate their space technology platforms to prepare for a massive invasion of open standard 5G sensors?
