The main driver of such a short payback period is the decrease of operational costs, which comprises both energy savings and economy due to precise bills.

The fire chief zeroed in on LED lights with long-lasting batteries that could be recharged through solar power. The lights also came with a sensor so they would only turn on from dusk to dawn.

As illustrated in the nearby figure, security technologies will have a role in each of these network slices, including city surveillance, acoustic sensors, streaming video and industrial automation.

Acting as a voluntary market mechanism, it will create verified and tradable CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) certifying that one tonne of CO2 that has been removed or captured. Certificates will be offered to removal methods used in wooden and carbonated building elements and biochar for soil improvements, with the first auctions set to begin in May or June. Early business backers of the venture include dairy firm Valio and Estonian legal services firm Hedman Partners.

Officials aim to arrive at a decision “soon,” said McCarthy, who did not provide an exact timeline.

“We want to see if we can build a tool, based on a more accurate model of how traffic and pedestrians behave, to optimize traffic for law enforcement. Say, when a fire call comes into a fire station, right now, the doors of the fire station go up, and the location information goes into a GPS system. But today, when the firefighters pop onto the road, they are back in the ‘80s, strobing the light and hoping cars will get out of the way. It would be easier if we could use the traffic signals and street lights to clear the road from Point A to Point B, and then have the [streetlight] system detect how the fire truck is moving through the street, restoring traffic flow behind it. That would save us money on fire stations, because we build them based on response times. Improving response times means we might not need as many stations.”

San Diego’s network of smart streetlights, which has been rolling out since early 2018, continues to grow. To date, some 2,000 of the sensor-laden devices have begun gathering pictures, sounds, and other data.

And indeed, other cities are following in the path that San Diego has been lighting, though, in the United States at least, San Diego will likely remain the largest installation for some time. Atlanta, Ga., and Portland, Ore., have also begun rolling out sensor-laden lamps from Current, but both projects are still in the pilot stage.

"I would like to see more rooftop solar in Georgia — particularly in Atlanta and Athens to help with their 100 percent clean energy goals," said Echols. "We could help these cities by raising the limit of both array size and buyback price for rooftop solar in their jurisdictions."

But Georgia also doesn’t have a policy champion for rooftop solar. Without proactive policies like net metering, it takes homeowners longer to get their return on rooftop solar.
