Cities around the world are in the beginning stages of a revolution in the world of power: using solar and wind/solar energy, integrated communications, and smart off-grid management and control can mean a world of difference for infrastructure. New systems and infrastructure upgrades for street lights and security, telecom systems, and Internet of Things devices can be located anywhere, managed from everywhere, and be fully off grid.

Typically, environmental impact assessment studies are not required for renewable energy projects except for offshore wind power projects, biomass power plants and municipal waste plants exceeding certain capacity. Such industries are classified in the ‘white’ category and thus consents from pollution control boards under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981 and Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974 are not required.
